Emblem on a HP Halifax bomber?
Hi guys, on the picture below, I see a roundel on the horizontal tail surface of this HP Halifax bomber. EDIT: it is actually a B-24 sitting on its tail! There is an extraordinary roundel on the tail. Why is that? Is this usual to find? Or this is some kind of special aircraft/special unit? Thanks!

Re: Emblem on a HP Halifax bomber?
Hi,
this is not a Halifax, but a B-24... Regards Heuser |

Re: Emblem on a HP Halifax bomber?
At first I thought it is a B-24, this one stands on a tailwheel, like the Halifax? Or maybe a B-24 that "sat" on its tail? And what about the emblem, wky on the rudder?
Ok, now I know, it is a B-24, probably some more information about that particular aircraft will be available soon! But yet - why does it have this marking on the tail? It is not a RAF sign, but rather some tactical sign? Last edited by Theodor; 28th October 2007 at 12:27. |

Re: Emblem on a HP Halifax bomber?
It does not have the proper proportions for an RAF roundel. I assume that it is some kind of tactical marking, though it is a new one to me.

Re: Emblem on a HP Halifax bomber?
To share with you, I got the answer to my questions!
This is a USAAF B-24. On the tail it has a roundel on the left and a dark square on the right. These are squadron markings - this machine belonged to 55th Bomb Wing, 460th BG, 15th AF ![]() |
