Re: Designation of VVS Regiment
DD definition is the one I have gone with.
For example, if there was a Bomber Aviation Regiment, ADD, I will type in "Long-Range Operations Bomber Aviation Regiment" If it was just DD for an Aviation Regiment, that would be "Long-Range Operations Aviation Regiment". The problem is sometimes even though it was part of Long Range Aviation (ADD, or DD), the unit did not have the designator in its official title. The same could be said for the PVO Fighter Regiments also. I have confirmed this through the official listing of the units and not one Fighter Regiment or Division has "PVO" in its designation (this is from the Operational Army listing). Boevoi Sostav Sovetskii Armii does have them as PVO, probably to differientiate them from the other Aviation Divisions. konev |

Re: Designation of VVS Regiment
it might help if we knew exactly what documents are being translated?
was it originally translated directly from Russian to English or was there an intermediate language? if so then there are probably many transliteration errors (mostly minor) ADD = Aviatsiya Dal'nevo Destviya = "aviation distance enhanced" (long range aviation later became the 18 VA -Voenno Armiya -Air Army) DBAP = Dal'nevo Bombardirovochniy Aviatsiya Polk = long range bomber aviation regiment DD = Dal'niy Deystviya = Distance enhanced however , this version is only for the Yak-9DD aircraft and not a unit designator IA PVO = Istrebetel'niy Aviapolk Protivo-Vozdushnovo Oberona = Destroyer (fighter) aviation regiment of the Anti-Air defense. DD and ADD cannot be used interchangeably as they mean different things. also ADD was an army unit not a naval one , these units are the VVS-VMF VVS-VMF = Voyenno-Vozdushne Sili-Voenno-Morskogo Flota -Naval Air Forces. |
