Re: Max bomb loads to distances for BC 4 engine bombers
This mathematics is not too difficult!
200 gallons reserve Berlin is 1836 miles: needed 1836/0,94 gallons=1954 gallons. Full fuel load=200+1954=2154 gallons. Fuel weight: 2154x7,2 lbs=15.509lbs. (Fuel density is 7,2lbs per gallon) |

Another completion: fuel consumption of 0,94 miles per gallon.

Re: Max bomb loads to distances for BC 4 engine bombers
From where? From Bomber Command's bases in eastern England it is more like 550 miles each way (on a straight line). You would have to take a lot of diversionary legs to get to your figure.

Re: Max bomb loads to distances for BC 4 engine bombers
Looks like km round trip. I have been posting wrong converted Imperial numbers throughout this thread (and correcting!) so have considerable sympathy if this proves to be the case.

Re: Max bomb loads to distances for BC 4 engine bombers
Well if you look at Martin Middlebrook's book, 'The Berlin Raids' you will see that quite often they did not take the direct route. For instance 23/24 Dec 1943 went South as if to the Rhur, then East towards Leipzig, and then North to Berlin and then more or less straight back.
Of course 1836 represents the direct round trip in km., but the actual trip was more likely to be at least 1,500 miles I would think. |
