Hi Alex,
There was a unit called the 'Fighter Training Center'. It was based in Morocco and Algeria from February 1943 to July 1944. It had several types of fighter, including P-38s. I believe it served like a British OTU, honing the skills of young pilots just assigned to the MTO and teaching them combat techniques. The instructors were battle-tested pilots. While I have not done any real research yet on this unit I have found any information very hard to come by. The phrase "Hen's teeth" comes to mind ! Regards, Martin Gleeson.
