Goebbels fear of Mosquitos
With only a very few exceptions (see below**) the De Havilland Mosquito is the only aircraft referred to by name in Goebbels Diary, which I have just read. This would seem to be because of the constant bombing raids made by this aircraft on Berlin towards the end of the war, which, of course , greatly disrupted both his work and domestic life. Indeed, other than about one week commencing the 1st.of April 1945, he details in his last diary on a daily basis the Mosquito as being responsible for raids every night, and even speaks of on one occasion as 200 or Mosquitos raiding Berlin. I know that Goebbels was no aviation expert so he could have been mistaken into thinking that the Main Force Lancasters could have been Pathfinder Mosquitos, but he was nevertheless a intelligent man. Is it known if Mosquitos raided Berlin with this level of frequency and in this sort of numbers ?
** He once referred to B-17's and perhaps twice mentioned the ME-262. |
