JU 188 crashed near Saint Lo circa 10 june 1944
Dear All
At night , a JU188 equipped with BMW801 G engines and flames dampfer, crashed at Chaignes near Saint Lo in Normandy . The crash date was circa 10 june 1944 . Traces of small bullets have been found in the engine (303 caliber) , so it might have been shot down my an English nightfighter . The engine was not running when the aircraft crashed , it could also have fallen appart as the propeller blades are not bent (one has a bullet hole in it ) . Any information on the suject is wellcome. The standard camouflage schme for a bomber (RLM71 and RLM70) was oversprauyed by a light colour (RLM76 RLM65 or RLM02) it is difficult to determine preciselly before the remaining parts of the engine cowling being restores and washed. Enclose a photo ot he engine itself , washed, note the flame dampfer .Now the engine is on display in a samll museum at Duclair in Normandy 30 km west Rouen . All the best Many thanks for your help Eric Larger |

Why do you mean it is a Ju 188? I could also be a Ju 88 G-1 nightfighter!!

Re: JU 188 crashed near Saint Lo circa 10 june 1944
Yes
it could be a night fighter, but I don't think so regarding the paints remaining on the engine cowlings . But in the pieces found on place there was the the circle and the ball bearing of the upper turret of JU 188 |

Re: JU 188 crashed near Saint Lo circa 10 june 1944
Eric,
Ulf Balkes book shows Ju188E-1 U5+EM 260231 crew of Ltn Weshe four missing one POW on 10/11-6-44 , additionally Ju88S-1 Z6+CH 301471 crew of Uffz. Duchstein were missing the same night. In both cases there is no known location so either or both may also have come down in the sea. KG6 losses in the period are shown as Ju188A-2's, Regards Brian Bines |
