Hi Adam
From "Aircraft of the Spanish Civil War" by Gerald Howson AS/88 were displaying a symbol by Feb1938 but the book mentions only an Ace of Spades on a Black Disc on either side of the nose and this is confirmed in a photo of an He59 although this also shows the white rudder with a black diagonal cross that was used by Franco's Air Force after WW2 and into the 60's at least Regards Dick
