Bf 109 E-6?

Was there a Bf 109 E-6 ? I have a loss of 7.(F)/LG 2 of a Bf 109 E-6 WNr. 4747 on 19-Aug-41.

Any help is welcome,

Norbert

Re: Bf 109 E-6?

From the book, Messeschmitt Bf 109, Recognition Manual by Marco Fernandez-Sommerau.

"The Bf 109 E-5 and E-6 were reconnaissance variants derived from the Bf 109 E-1 and carried fuselage mounted cameras. The former carried the Zeiss Rb 21/18 and the latter a smaller Rb 12,5/7 x 9.
Very few examples of either sub-type were built and neither were intended to be fitted with the DB 601N engine.
No Werknummern were allocated to this variant, all conversions being made from existing airframes."

I can't find a werk # in the 4700 range assigned for the Bf 109 E.???

Regards,
Mike

Re: Bf 109 E-6?

Thanks for the reply. Makes sense with the recce version. Interesting regarding WNr. Maybe someone else has the answer to this puzzle.

Regards,

Norbert

Re: Bf 109 E-6?

E-6 was not intended as a recce version according WNF docs.

Re: Bf 109 E-6?

Dear Norbert,

the Bf 109 E-6 did in fact exist, although it was manufactured only in small numbers. According to C-Amts Programm LC 21, dated Nov. 1st, 1940, a total of 9 aircraft were to be produced, all of which were to be delivered by November 30th, 1940. In fact, I have the WerkNr. for at least 12 Bf 109 E-6 so that apparently the original plan was exceeded.

All known Bf 190 E-6 were assemlbled at Arado's Warnemünde plant and were derived from the E-7 series in the WNr.-range 4900, being equipped with the DB 601 N. According to Flugzeug-Baureihen Blatt Bf 109, Chef TLR Fl. Nr. 8569/44, dated August 1st, 1944 the aircraft weere equipped with two powered cameras HK 12,5 / 7x9, so that this series was expressly designed as a recconnaissance version. Accordingly the strength returns of a number of F- and H-Staffeln contain small numbers of E-6.

The first eight Bf 109 E-6 were assigned to the Ob.d.H. in March 1941 and were then distributed to the recce-units.

Apparently at a later stage surviving Bf 109 E-6 were converted to E-7 standard, some to E-9 standard in the course of major repairs.

Sorry, my time is scarce but I hope this helps.

Regards

Jochen Prien
