Re: Photos 7-12
Guys
Strange war time photo (at least to me) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=140248195120 Said to have been taken at Castel Benito outside Tripoli and showing capt CR 42. I am lousy in ID aeroplanes when just showing parts, but did really CB look like this with such lush vegetation? Is it really CR 42 we are looking at and why would the Italians dismantle them? Also the date is suspicious. Surely by May 1943 (even April if we look at it as an American date...) the Allies had bypassed Tripoli by miles and were on the brink of capturing all of Tunisia and throw the Axis out of Africa all together so why this late publishing date?? Re: Photos 7-12
The wings on the left certainly look very much like G.50

Re: Photos 7-12
Yes, I belive they are Fiat G 50, from the location of the gear to the wings. The CR 42 did not have mass counterbalance on the ailerons.
The wing behind would be the top side of a wing and the one in front is the underside. Note the black St Andrew cross on the underside of the wing. This was used early on in North Africa, Libyan sector as IFF for anti-aircraft units on the ground. It appears the crosses were superseded by white fuselage bands. The date of 1943 would seem to indicate that these aircraft had been in derelict condition for quite some time. Given the markings my quick research indicates that these may be aircraft of 2 Gruppo CT, Squadriglie 150, 151, 152. It appear that the G. 50 arrived at Castelbenito 21 to 23 December 1940. In "Courage Alone", it is noted that the aircraft immediately were affected by sand in the engines. So it might be possible these aircraft were sitting under those trees for a couple of years. ...and a big thanks to Ed for finding more diamonds in the rough.

Re: Photos 7-12
Thanks Guys
G.50 works fine with me! Wonder why the Italians didn't use the wrecks as decoys, or did they? Maybe they were no longer of any use as decoys either. They look pretty miserable. Saying that I must also say I like the comments on the back side of the photo, "they will be put to use by the United Nations".... Yeah, right... Number 999th Squadron RAF making a real impact over Sicily... Cheers Stig |

Re: Photos 7-12
But all evidence points to them being derelict aircraft, stripped and left by the side of the road. Look at the scrap in front of the wings and the fallen tree branches, perhaps from shell fire. Not a place one leaves good aircraft.
The markings indicate 1940, yet the picture is dated 1943. The X marking was not used after early 1941. By July of 1941 the unit was already back in Italy. Those G 50 were out of commission sometime during the first months of 1941. Perhaps allied units lined them up to be taken away for scrap.
