Hi guys, great find again from Ed, well done once again for locating this gem!

Is this a/c coded L1+LL? from the 3/LG1, and most importantly is this loss known.

Best regs,
Steve.

Steve,

This loss is not presently known and creates a mystery. We have an identified L1+FL down during the WC, but there is no other loss during that period to 3./LG1 that could account for this crash, which almost certainly took place during the May-June 1940 period. Still trying to sort this out.

Regards,

Hi,

Emergency landing Vioelles 1940?

Interesting to see them presumably draining fuel from the tanks. Also looks as though the aircraft may have been there for a while as the vegetation is quite well grown under it and not so around it - eaten by sheep/cows or cut down perhaps?

Regards,

David

Hi David,

Thanks for your help.

I cannot find a place in france/belgium with the name vioelles, but I found a place with the name "Violès" in the South of France, between Toulouse and Montpellier.

Maybe this helps.

Cheers, Thomas

Re: Unidentified He111 insignia on two force-landed a/c Western Campaign

I hope any French readers will excuse my attempt here but it occurred to me that the German writer may have misspelled the location. So I looked up Violles on google maps and got this:

http://www.maplandia.com/france/midi...luppe-violles/

You'll note the full name is luppe-violles.

Ed

Hi Peter,

I must admit that I thought that at first but when comparing the 'o' in 'notlandung' with that in the place name they were too similar, also the handwriters style would indicate a lower down and more prominent start point for the initial upright of the 'N' and that is why I finally went for Vioelles!

There again it could also be a case of the owner and inscriber of the photo getting it wrong!

Regards

David
