Kittyhawk losses 20.10-23.10.42

Hi folks,
i search for Kittyhawk serials, lost
with the 260 Squadron between 20.10 and 23.10.42.
I Know that Srg Stebbing was KIA when he was shot down on
20.10.42, maybe by an italian Pilot.

Re: Kittyhawk losses 20.10.42

Hello.
It seems that Sgt Stebbings was shot down the 20/10/42 by a 109 near El Daba (Egypt) the first day of the offensive of the WDAF but it was the first casualty but not the last of the day for the 260 Sqn. he was reported later to be POW.

The Aircraft of F/L Davis and P/O Thagard were badly damaged by Mc 202 of 23° Gruppo but the pilots were safe. Before F/L Davis had the opportunity to shot down 1 Bf 109 of 8/ JG 53

The same day the aircraft of Sgt Barber was also badly damaged in the same aera of EL Daba by a 109.

the opponents of the Kittyhawks were 16 bf 109 from II, III/JG 27 and III JG 53 and some Macchi MC 202 of 23° gruppo.

Re: Kittyhawk losses 22.10.42

No casualty for the Kittyhawk of 260 Sqn. the 21/10/42

But the 22/10/42 The aircraft of Canadian Sgt Rattle was badly damaged by a bf 109 of 8 JG/27 near El Alamein. It was the first sortie of the Canadian who was the wingman of the canadian ace J-F Edwards. Sgt Rattle had the opportunity to probably destroyed his opponent a Bf 109 F probably werk N° 10 102 or possibly also Werk n° 7220 difficult to say because J-F Edwards got also one Confirmed at the same moment of the day (12.30)

Smile Re: Kittyhawk losses 23.10.42

for the 23.10.42, The Germans put their efforts against the Kittyhawk pilots and they did well for the 260 sqn.

P/O Mink was shot down (but safe) by a Bf 109, W/O Tomlinson was KIA (HS-B) near El Daba by a MC 202 as Sgt Colley (HS-C) and Sgt Sheppard who were lucky to be safe. The victors were italian pilots from 23° Gruppo, led by Claudio solaro. the first "Kitty" was shot down by Tenente Giorgio Solalori, the second was shared by 3 pilots.

2 other Kittyhawk of 260 Sqn were badly damaged this day of F/O Aithison (HS-O) and P/O Thornhill (HS-X)both safe.

Thank you

Stebbings was not shot down by fighter but either Flak or engine failure, according to him. He is still alive as he was taken POW
