Re: Kurierstaffel 5 & 7, activities 1940 ?
There seems to be very little known about these units but here's what I found:
Kurier St. 5 26.08.39 formed at Neisse (as Kurier St. 4), with 6 a/c. 11.39 operational and supported AOK 10.. 02.40 exchanged identities with Kurier St. 4. 1942 operated in the east. 10.42 became 25./Fl.Verb.G. 2, operated in the South Sector. FPN L 28648 then L 06773 Kurier St. 7 26.08.39 formed at Mayen with 6 a/c. 11.39 operational for use by AOK 5. 08.41 based at Soroki 09.41 operated near Dimitrievka. 21.09.41 Staka Hptm. Gert Suwelack KIA when he landed his Fi 156 (WNr. 5287) in a minefield. 10.41 at Nikolayev. 12.41 at Kachowka. 01.42 at Simferopol 05.42 at Dnepropetrovsk. 12.42 based at Millerovo. 01.43 – 09.43 at Zaporozhye 10.43 renamed as 12./Fl.Verb.G. 2 in the South sector. FpN: L 20609 I hope this helps DGS |

Re: Kurierstaffel 5 & 7, activities 1940 ?
Hi Doug
My source is Barry Rosch and Luftwaffe Codes, markings and units 1939-45 According to him Kurierst 5 was formed under that name and not under the name Kurierst 4. He also states that the unit became 25/Fl.Verb.G2 in November 1943 and not Oct 1942 as you list. He confirms the swap between St 4 and 5 in Feb 1940. Likewise Kurierst 7 became 12./Fl.Verb.G2 in Dec 1943 and not Oct 1943. I suppose you rely on later details, but can you confirm your sources? Cheers Stig |

Re: Kurierstaffel 5 & 7, activities 1940 ?
The sources I used were:
Ries, Karl Luftwaffen Story 1935-1939 (Mainz, 1974).- page 179 Dierich, Wolfgang. Die Verbände der Luftwaffe 1935-1945: Gliederungen und Kurzchroniken – Eine Dokumentation (Stuttgart: Motorbuch Verlag, 1976). – pages 190 and 191 Kannapin, Norbert. Die Deutsche Feldpostübersicht 1939 - 1945; 3 Bände; Osnabrück: Biblio Verlag, 1980-82). ISBN: 3-7648-1183-8 - various pages The above confirm the unit redesignations. Less reliable, but still helpful: Bateson, Richard, "Fieseler Fi 156 Storch; Profile #228" Profile Publications.- page 137 Piekalkiewicz, J. "Fieseler Fi 156 Storch im Zweiten Weltkrieg" (Stuttgart: Motorbuch Verlag). - page 74 Larry deZeng’s notes (for personnel) are drawn mainly from microfilms of original documents, typically assignment orders. I even resorted to Michael Holm’s website www.ww2.dk. Additionally, from Larry’s Personnel Notes: KRIPPENDORF, Max. 26.06.42 Oblt.(d.R./Fl.), trf from Kurierstaffel 7 (Staka?) to Stab/1. Fliegerdivision. 01.09.42 promo to Hptm.(d.R./Fl.). SACHTLEBER, Paul. 26.11.42 Maj., Staka Kurierstaffel 5, reported MIA. |

Re: Kurierstaffel 5 & 7, activities 1940 ?
Thanks Doug
I have the sources quoted except the three volume set Die Deutsche Feldtpostübersicht. None of those I have are very specific about the dates which is my main motive behind my e-mail. I guess it is the "übersicht" that is the main give away for these dates and both you and Barry are using the same source, but with different end results. I have received a private e-mail from Larry which I will check and see what he says Cheers Stig |
