Hans-Joachim Marseille's favourite record :

Hi all,

I'm trying to locate some information about what they said was Hans-Joachim Marseille's favourite record, "Rumba Asul" during his service time in North Africa.

Maybe somebody here have heard about this record, or maybe it was a specific title from a song ??
Maybe it's also downloadable somewhere ??

Warmest regards,
Jagdkommando

Use Google, and search Rumba Azul or Rumba de Azul; you will be listening to this tune in no time . . . .

Re: Hans-Joachim Marseille's favourite record :

I have a youtube link to this song - a 1934 recording, which might be the one that would be listened to.

Re: Hans-Joachim Marseille's favourite record :

Hi, and thanks!!

That's the one..... Oberstleutnant Franzistek was the one that actually found the body of Marseille incidentelly, and that same evening, Franzistek ordered Marseille's favourite song to be played in the camp.

Warmest regards,
Jagdkomm.

Hans-Joachim Marseille was an admirable pilot and warrior, but what an appalling taste in music!

Re: Hans-Joachim Marseille's favourite record :

I've heard worse from the era, trust me.

At least it wasn't that "State sanctioned" jazz/big band. Some of that raises my musical hackles.

Hmmm I would tend to agree I actually think the sound is quite interesting as an early Cuban sound. Granted they are no Buena Vista Social Club but interesting none the less.

Must have been quite unique hearing that wafting from his tent at dust in the desert.

Re: Hans-Joachim Marseille's favourite record :

When I first listened to it, I was a little disappointed in a way, as I can easily like many kinds of songs from that era, but this one was hard to swallow..... but hey, whilie painting one of my walls outside on the house the other day, I realized that I was suddenly whistling that song while on the top of the ladder. Maybe it was not so bad after all, but yes it must have been a bit strange to hear that song from his tent in the desert. Very sad that he passed away like he did, but as they say : "Soldiers never dies, they only fade away".

Rumba Azul

Hi all,

As a decklared Marseille's fan, I was trying to find this song for many years.
Many, many thanks, Cori !!! Wonderful trophy !

Sorry Lingodog, as the matter of Marseille's taste I can't agree with You.
He received musical education, played quite well the piano.

As a musician, I can say it's quite good, and there is something in this song.
It's very simple composition of course, but the most importand for me is that it contains moody character like I imagined it should have.
It's sad and joyful at the same time.

When I hear it, I can imagine tired JG 27 pilots during their evenings in hot summer and autumn 1942...

Best regards,

Nef
