As I said I think (and I thought I had spelled his name incorrectly-one of the problems of being 1000 miles from home). I seem to remember it was him climbing out of his cockpit and then a group photo..............

Maj Kurt Bühligen's P-47 victory on June 6, 1944

Hello Michael

Short of somebody being able to check his Flugbuch there is probably no way to confirm which aircraft he was flying on a particular occasion but considering that he was certainly flying a Fw 190 A-8 the next day when he claimed his next two victories as recorded by photographs he almost certainly was. Incidentally, according to 2nd Tactical Air Force Volume One by Shores and Thomas this claim was actually made against a Typhoon of 183 Sqn, RAF.

Horrido!

Leo

Re: Maj Kurt Buhlingen's P-47 victory on June 6,1944

According to Jagdfliegerverbände Vol. 13/III page 214 on 6 June 1944 a Fw 190 formation (50 aircraft) of Stab/JG 2, I./JG 2 and III./JG 2 encountered numerous P-47 and Typhoons (RAF Sqn 183 and 184) shortly before 12 o’clock in the area east of Caen. The JG 2 units claimed 2 P-47 and 4 Typhoons between 11:57 and 12:16.
Details in Jagdfliegerverbände Vol. 13/IV:
11:57 P-47 Maj Kurt Bühligen Stab/JG 2
12.10 Typhoon Gefr Manfred Fieseler 10./JG 2
12:14 Typhoon Hptm Herbert Huppertz Stab III./JG 2
12:15 Typhoon Hptm Herbert Huppertz Stab III./JG 2
12.15 Typhoon Ofw Ludwig Hartmann 4./JG 2
12:16 P-47Uffz Romuald Nistler 2./JG 2.
So on 6 June 1944 Maj Bühligen flew a Fw 190 and claimed a P-47.

Regards
Leo

Maj Kurt Bühligen's P-47 victory on June 6, 1944

Hello Leo

It is very interesting that Prien and the other authors of the Jagdfliegerverbände series mention that P-47 fighters were involved in the engagement but according to the information in this thread it would appear that no aircraft of that type were lost on that day due to aerial combat. Perhaps a Thunderbolt unit was engaged but did not suffer any losses? I have read that sorting out which unit fought which unit over the Invasion Front is quite the nightmare.

Horrido!

Leo
