Spitfire claim on 24th May 1942
Hello
On this day Spitfires from RAF 332 Norw. SQN and 167 SQN found and attacked what is belived to be a lone German Ju 88 plane off Hartlepool, Britain at appx 07:20. After the air combat both Squadrons were allowed shared "1 Ju 88 probable". Later RAF 13th Group admitted that this aircraft in fact was not destroyed and that it had been able to reach airfield Schipol were it damaged had landed. However the allowed claim was not changed. By the way one of the Norwegian Spitfires was destroyed and its pilot Fnr. T.Strand was woounded and put out of action for 6 months. Is there any who could give some information on this German plane, type, unit, crew and so on... Greetings from Norway (soon wintercold) Knut Larsson |

Re: Spitfire claim on 24th May 1942
Knut,
The QM;s returns dated 27th May show that on 24-5-42 a Ju88D-1 w.n. 1476 of 3(F)/122 crash landed at Schipol with 80% damage following enemy fire. No crew shown so they were not injured, Brian Bines |

Re: Spitfire claim on 24th May 1942
RAF Catterick ORB states that on 24 May 1942, Red Section No.332 Sqdn attacked a Ju88 east of Blyth. Nine feet of the Ju.88s starboard wing was shot off. 332 Sq. was credited with ½ 'probably destroyed'. The other ½ was credited to No.167 Sqdn, Acklington.

Re: Spitfire claim on 24th May 1942
Hey
Thank you very much Brian, Bill and Frans for your help regarding the Norwegian claim against a Ju 88 on 24th May 1942. I hope for further help regarding the handful more Nordic claims against Luftwaffe twin engined aircrafts. I come back later with a new item but until then have a fine daY .... Greetings from Norway Knut |
