Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Yes Paul thanks, that's the picture I have. I didn't post as I could recall who had sent it, and why I have it as 6./KG 76 I do not know, perhaps someone mentioned to me at the time.

So the three arrow emblem could still be 9./KG76. Certainly Karl Reis thought so and he had many contacts with surviving veterans. Do we have any photos with codes and emblem?

5./KG76 emblem

Chris, I believe someone mentioned that in Chris Goss's "Do17 Operations in Focus" book published by Red Kite, there are 5-6 photos of damaged F1+HN with the upward 3 arrow emblem on the nose. Sadly I do not own the book to confirm this. I think I will buy the book as I really do need to know what the emblem of 5./KG76 is.

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Hi, Chris...

Sadly, no... and we must bear in mind Robert's comment from page one of this thread, that there are photos of aircraft attributed to 5.Staffel carrying this emblem, one such being on page 50 of Chris Goss's Dornier 17 in Focus (Red Kite).

Perhaps Larry or Doug could shed some light on this one, given that they've used it in their publication and attributed it to 9.Staffel?

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Hi Clint and Paul

I have the book (I had forgotten I had it) and yes on page 50 the photos are clearly a very badly damaged F1+HN with what has been described, in the past, as a 9./KG76 three arrow emblem. Discounting a transfer of aircraft between the two staffels, with a former emblem not removed, one must conclude that this emblem is in fact 5. Staffel. None of the other photos I have with this emblem show alpha codes that would skew the argument in favour of the 9./KG76 direction. So unless other photos exist showing 9./KG76 association...................

By the way I must recommend this book (ISBN 0-9546201-4-3, in truth I had not really taken much notice of it, some very nice photos. Chris/Red Kite should be congratulated in bringing so many good well reproduced images together with informative captions at such a reasonable price.

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Thanks for the recommendation Chris just bagged it for £9.73 at amazon.

Glad we have confirmed the identity of 5./KG76.

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

I found this pic with the three arrow emblem belongig to 9./KG 76 year 1940. Now, is it 5.th or 9.th Staffel?

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Hi, Byron...

This is one of those confusing photos, and I was waiting to see who would bring it to this thread... . If some sources state that it is 9.Staffel, then why is the propellor spinner white? I know it's a small thing, and I accept it could be a spinner change due to necessity, but the German practice of colouring the propellor spinner in the Staffel colour - if applicable here - surely rules out 9.Staffel, as that Staffel's I/D colour was yellow.

However, the photo below, from www.warbirdphotographs.com, does somewhat contradict things, as it quite clearly has yellow spinners...!

I am still as confused as I was at the start of this thread...

Regards...

Paul

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Byron,

I would suggest that the spinner in your source is not actually white. Rather it looks like a much faded yellow. Just comparing the white of the emblem and the spinner it doesn't seem to match too well. Instead a well-worn yellow seems more like a closer match.

Re: 5./KG76 Emblem?

Adam and Paul,

thank you for your notices but we still can`t determine definitely the emblem of Staffel 9 or 5.
Besides what has one to tell about the other one attached emblem of Staffel 9 (Nr. 357 Ketley & Rolfe) ?
