From Ultra, I have Notzold's aircraft as Werk Nummer 20683.

What sources are you using, Bruce?

Re: Erg.Gr Sud 1943-44 Losses

Hi Nick,

as I noted previously I got several hand-written lists in 1981 when I was working with Davy McKee on a large project in Cologne.
One of he engineers was a WW2 aviaton buff and I got quite friendly with him, he supplied me with the lists from his own research, sadly he passed away in the 90's.

Merry Christmas

Bruce

Hi,
28.12.1943 Fw.Franz-Josef Kurth (1) KIA Fw190A-5 (52655) White 4 LK Hyeres by P38 FSA.
In my Knowledge the good day is 28.11.1943. The allied claimed any aerial victory on 28.12 an any P-38 unit was active over southern France this particuliar day.
The 1st FGwas involved on 28.11.1943 against german fighters. P-38 flew escort for the 42nd Bomb Wing (B-26) targeting german bomber's A/D.
Have a nice day, and Merry Christmas
Guy

Re: Erg.Gr Sud 1943-44 Losses

Hi Guy,
Thanks for your comment, I am sure that you are correct - the only Luftwaffe loss in MTO on 28 Dec 1943 I have noted is a Me.410 (or 210) (F6+RK) of 2(F)/122 shot down near Elba by /Lt.T E Yon in a Spitfire of the 5thFS/52nd FG.

On 28 Nov 1943 the following pilots of 71st FS/1st FG ( flying P.38's claimed Fw190's in the vicinity of Toulon:-
F.O. J B Boyd - 1; 1/Lt. A C Chase - 1; and Lt. G H Parker - 1. with Parker also claiming a probable plus a damaged and 1/Lt C E Simpson claiming
2 damaged.
These 3 surely must be Kammerling, Leifelfing and Kurth. Incidentally can anyone tell me what FSA stands for ?

Cheers

Hi Nick,

thanks for the translation.

I notice from Frank Olynyk's MTO Claims book that there wer quite a few USAAF combats ovr the South of France in 1944, were there any other Luftwaffe fighter units active in the area ?

By the way ,I am a big fan of your Ghost Bombrs Site plus i have both your excellent books.

all the very best

Bruce

In 1944 IIRC, I./JG 2 (Fw 190 and Bf 109) put in the occasional appearance and made some claims; 2./NAG 13 was based at Cuers and lost a few aircraft to the Allies (again Fw 190 and Bf 109); III./SG 4 was refitting there for a while also, with individual Staffeln flying anti-submarine patrols (from what I remember of the War Diary entries, these were entirely uneventful).

Glad you like the books.
