leo - I am curious. Was he attacking 9th AF mediums or down low when he engaged a P-38?

That was a day for big 8th AF battles from Munster to Hanover/Misburg to Kassel to Leipzig - all across northern Germany - but all Mustangs except for 78FG credits in p-47s from Hanover to Gutersloh.
