Re: unkown a/c - 3/3/44 Dora-9?
Artie Bob, Chris,
Thanks for getting back to me. AB, Your information corroborates what I have, thank you for your input. Chris, Not to worry about any delay - I appreciate the anyone taking the time out of their schedules to post. Forgive my ignorance regarding the roles of the various Luftwaffe fighter units - if these beefed up 190's were indeed JG1's, what would a unit normally assigned to ground attack be doing defending against an incoming bomber mission? Since the 3/3/44 mission was the first attempt at bombing Berlin, is it safe to assume that with the target being the capital that it was an 'all hands' siuation, that is any availbale unit was scrambled to assist in the defense despite it's normal duties? Just curious. Tim |

Re: unkown a/c - 3/3/44 Dora-9?
Some confusion seems to have crept in here. JG 1 wasn't "normally assigned to ground attack", it had been on air defence duties in the West for a long time.

Re: unkown a/c - 3/3/44 Dora-9?
Nick, Tim,
Sorry for introducing confusion. I should've been clearer, I meant that late-war ground-attack aircraft/units is my area of "expertise" and mid-war fighter units in the West, i.e. JG1, is not. Cheers, Chris |

It was I./JG1 who used the striped cowlings - just to narrow it down for you.
The fairing underneath must have been the droptank and it's rack. /Anders |

Re: unkown a/c - 3/3/44 Dora-9?
Chris,
That was my bad - looking back on your post I clearly mis-read it. Nick, Thanks for straightening me out. Anders, Thanks for the specifics. I'm interested in particluar about these "long noses' because John Godfrey (the subject of my reearch) wrote in his memoirs that the pilot with whom he tangled that day was the best he ever flew against. Their engagement ended with Godfrey breaking away from the stream of 20mm cannon fire and diving into the clouds. Thanks all for your replies! Tim |
