Me 262. A regrettable typo on my part. Jurleit on page 116 says:

Führerkurierstaffel
Staffelkapitän Hptm. Talk

Re: Fuhrer Kurier Staffel

Guys,

I encourage you to consider the altitudes of some of these claims:

16.08.44 Oblt. Klenk Jasta: i.Führer-Kür.St. Pe-2 £ 15 N/US-3.8: at 8.000 m. 10.14 Film C. 2035/II Anerk: Nr. –

28.08.44 Oblt. Gotthold Jasta: Führer-Kurier St. Boston III £ SD 94/25 O.N.: at 8.000 m. 10.20 Film C. 2035/II Anerk: Nr. 4

05.09.44 Ofw. W. Schmitz Jasta: i.Führer-Kür.St. Pe-2 £ UB-74/25 O.N. 6.200 m. 11.25 Film C. 2035/II Anerk: Nr. 5

28.10.44 Ofw. Wolkenstein Jasta: i.Führer-Kür.St. Pe-2 £ 25 N/SD-8.2: at 6.000 m. 13.45 Film C. 2032/I Anerk: Nr. -

You see that they are around the 6000-8000m mark. Having devoted myself to matching allied and soviet losses to German claims (see my posts elsewhere on this great forum) I hazard a guess that these were photo reconnaissance aircraft as opposed to bombers (which normally operated around the 3000-3500m mark on the Eastern Front). Ipso facto, I surmise that one of the unit's jobs was intercepting incursions by photo-recce aircraft. I know what a weak argument that is, but I put it out there as food-for-thought.

Nick

Re: Fuhrer Kurier Staffel

Here is the origin of the Kurierstaffel des Führers > Verbindungsstaffel 7 confusion and mix up. Günther Ott is such a distinguished and respected expert and author on the Luftwaffe that I never thought to double-check his statement.

OTT, Günther. “ ‘Unternehmen Reichskanzlei’ - 2. In: Jet & Prop Heft 4/1995, pages 43.50.

On page 44 the author states:

F.d.F. = Fliegerstaffel des Führers

Paul Talk an Bord.

[Translation so our moderators don’t throw a fit and have to be taken to the hospital : “The next day it began to get dicey in Gatow when Soviet troops began to approach the airfield from the north. In the late evening of April 24, the first machines of FdF flew from there (Gatow). Obviously, however, there was a shortage of pilots in Gatow, so at 20:00 Major Lissau took off from Rechlin to Gatow, where he arrived at 21:00; besides an Oberfeldwebel, he had Capt. Paul Talk on board. This was the head of Verbindungsstaffel 7 of the FdF, that was the former Führerkurierstaffel, which had been renamed in March 1944.”]

Nick, An American idiom probably used badly on my part. No problems with your post(s). What we have to watch is posts in non-English not related to an original document in original language. While we appreciate that some members have a limited command of English, it seems that the vast majority make posts that are understandable and OK. We do not seek perfection!
