I think the a/c is from 5./JG 27.IRC, II Gruppe used red gruppe bars on all its machines during this time frame.

Thanks for the tip. It is deff not a Luciole. I had already rejected the Caudron when your ID reply made me look again. What I had taken for a rotary engine could well be an inline of some sort. No readily visible exhaust pipes though...

I have to agree it has some very Caudron look-a-like features such as the tailfin, so is it possible it is an earlier Caudron type? Spain after all operated a couple of other types, such as C.59 and C.490

Anyone else?

I am gonna do further researches.
Personnaly, I was not 100% sure it was a Luciole, but the fin indicates a Caudron.

Stig,
I think it is a C-59, a basic trainer issued in 1921, selected by the french air force and built in several hundreds, exported in various countries including Spain.
This particuliar machine has not the original engine (Hispano 8 Aa 180ch),
maybe a De Havilland ?

These were Caudron C.59 or C.490 used by Republican Flight School. Three of them were captured in an aerodrome in Teruel on April 1938 by nationalist ace Angel Salas who landed his CR-32 in the airstrip to not let them take off.

That photo has been discussed here - it is of an incident involving Erich Krenke of 6./JG 27.

Jim,

The photo is of my father standing in front of the ME 109.

All opinions were that it was Erich's plane.

Further research of my fathers records show that he was back in Australia in April 1942 and Erich was shot down in May 1942 so the search continues as to who's plane it is. The photo is dated xmas 1941.

What seams to be holding things up is the layout of the markings which were not commonly used in the area of El Adem A/F and North Africa around that time.

I have found lots of similar markings but they all seam to come well after xmas 1941.

In spite of all the help I have received from this forum whilst trying to identify the ME 109, I have not been able even able get close to the identification.

My next avenue of searching is to try and contact members of my fathers unit that are still alive in Australia and see if anyone has similar photos. This might give further clues.

My fathers unit was the 2/1 Anti Aircraft Regiment, Australian Army.

However, I would like to ask any readers of this forum if they have any photos of ME 109s, number 9, that were in the area of Tobruk and El Adem A/F during the period June 1941 to April 1942.

I would also like to thank all that have contributed on this subject up to now.
