On the photo of white 34; what are the two tags under the gun hatches? Are they stencils? In other photos there are often 2 of these, but some photos show just one.

Dear Don,
The stencils indicate the number of rounds to be loaded for each of the MK 108 cannons. One cannon receives 80 rounds, while the other receives 100 rounds. For a 2-cannon Me 262, there would only be a single stencil below the gun hatch. Obviously, in this photo white 34 has been fitted with a fighter nose. Regards, Richard |

Hello gentleman
I had heard of several locations on the 262 where a W.Nr plate may have been attached if at all. The location on the port side of the aircraft was mentioned as a possible location, as well as the cockpit tub, the vertical stabilizer where the rudder attaches to, a couple of others that I can't recall right now as I don't have access to my files. This link http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...8/Me262_02.jpg shows the air scoop Richard is referring to, however no plate. I heard from some sources that the ID plates were taken off of the 262's by souvenir hunters. If that was so I would expect that one would have appeared by now. I agree that some photos show an indentation at that location which could very well have been for the ID plate. Stephen, thank you for the copy of the flugzeugtypenschild, the placement of an ID plate on the aircraft at that location makes logical sense for that is the side of the aircraft the pilot or service crews would enter and exit and having the ID of the plane there if required makes sense. On another note, the photo from the dig site showing the W.Nr there seems to be an additional "1" at the end of it as well as some other art work, etc. Is this a manufacturing stamp from the company that made the duralumin or aluminum? the "additional" stencil behind the W.-Nr. is not a "1", it's an "L". Just a theory of mine: That "L" represents the manufacturer code - in this case "Leipheim". In additional there is to see a fullstop between the last W.-Nr. digit 6 and the L. Possibly I am wrong anyway... Best Regards Norbert

Norbert, you are not.
It's .L but it could also be the L for Links or in English Left. Then it would be an indication for it's positie during assembling of the plane. Jaap |

You're absolutely right. So one has to find out whether the part with the W.-Nr. shown in this photography is part of the fuselage or of the left wing (or something else left sided of that kite). I simply can't make that out. Best Regards Norbert
