B-17 raid Frankfurt, 29 January 1944
A LW unit equipped with Fw190 encountered and claimed victories. Can anyone identify the LW units engaged and their claims?

Re: B-17 raid Frankfurt, 29 January 1944
Considering the critics Göring received during the bombing of Frankfurt in October, the Luftwaffe had to respond in force this time and 18 Gruppen were involved but one third of the victories were scored by the Fw 190-equiped I. & II. Gruppen of JG 26. So it's likely them but if you want a more precise answer, please provide more details.

Re: B-17 raid Frankfurt, 29 January 1944
Thanks Alfred. My interest is in a combat where 1/Lt Bill Whisner flying a P-47D of the 352nd FG USAAF claimed an Fw190 that had just shot down a B-17. The location was Malmedy.

Re: B-17 raid Frankfurt, 29 January 1944
In Frank Olynyk's USAAF Victory Claims in the ETO book the time of Whisner's claim is given as 1200 hours. I believe that would match up with II./JG 26.

Re: B-17 raid Frankfurt, 29 January 1944
For what is worth, the only Fw 190 units with losses are II./JG 26 and III./JG 2. I need to check into Caldwell and Mombeeck unit diaries if I can get more clues.

I wish they were somehow republished because the time of claim is really the data missing in most publications. |

Re: B-17 raid Frankfurt, 29 January 1944
I didn't find anything in a quick read through Caldwell; unfortunately I don't (yet) have Mombeeck's 1944 volume.

I've got 3 of his Victory Lists and I'd be willing to consider trading a kidney for the others. |

Re: B-17 raid Frankfurt, 29 January 1944
Many thanks chaps. The German pilot bailed out therefore it seems that it's a pilot who survived the encounter and claimed a B-17.

Re: B-17 raid Frankfurt, 29 January 1944
Hi Keith
Seems the Luftwaffe claimed fifty-nine aircraft during the day(a few in the Southern front), many by NJG units. Trouble is that the daily mikrofilm entries for January 1944 are missing. However there is a type of mikrofilm that gives date and time only for individual units, so basically the names of the claimant, type e.t.c need to be acquired, this is mostly done by flugbücher. Units are:- 1./SKG10 a B-17 at 1236 hrs South of Courtrai at 4000 metres(a Staffel claim) 9./JG2 B-24 at 1104 hrs 7000 metres by Josef Wurmheller Stab.II./JG2 P-47 at 1115 hrs 1000 metres by Kurt Bühligen 7./JG2 P-47 at 1130 hrs 7000 metres Paul Marx 11./JG2 P-47 1236 hrs 5000 metres by Heinz Lorbeer 9./JG2 unknown type 1230 hrs(unknown pilot) 7./JG3 B-17 1107 hrs Franz Birnstill 7./JG3 B-17 x 2 1106 & 1114 hrs Kurt Graf 7./JG3 B-17 1117 hrs Gerhard Pankalla 8./JG3 B-17 1111 hrs Bruno Bolowski 8./JG3 B-17 1137 hrs Hans Hedermann 8./JG3 1110 hrs Raimund Koch 9./JG3 B-17 1100 hrs Heinz Papendick Stab.III./JG3 B-17 1107 hrs Walter Dahl Stab.III./JG3 B-17 1117 hrs Jürgen Hoerschelmann Stab.III./JG3 B-17 1127 hrs Erwin Stahlberg 2./JG26 P-38 1115-1145 hrs(thirty minute combat) Hans Hartigs 2./JG26 B-17 x 2 1115-1145 hrs & 1152-1210 hrs Weide 4./JG26 "viermot" 1152-1210 hrs e.v(unknown pilot) 4./JG26 B-17 1152-1210 hrs Wolfgang Neu 7./JG26 P-47 1240 hrs Wilhelm Mayer 7./JG26 B-24 1124 hrs Stahnke 8./JG26 B-17 1330 hrs Wilhelm Hofmann 8./JG26 B-24 1145 hrs Rudolf Leuschel 8./JG26 P-47 1230 hrs Erich Lindner 8./JG26 P-38 1150 hrs Talkenberg 8./JG26 B-17 1130 hrs Josef Zirngibl Stab.I./JG26 B-17 1105 hrs Karl Borris Stab.I./JG26 B-17 1245 hrs Kurt Kranefeld 4./JG27 P-38 1145-1150 hrs Karl Mentnich 5./JG27 B-17 1052 hrs Karl-Heinz Bendert 5./JG27 B-17 1140 hrs Eberhard Schade 5./JG27 B-17 1106 hrs Heinz Schlechter Stab.II./JG27 B-17 1102 hrs Werner Schroer 5./NJG6 B-17 e.v 1155 hrs Karl-Heinz Grünert 5./NJG6 P-47 x 2 1150 & 1155 hrs Robert Krohn 5./NJG6 P-38 x 2 1150 & 1155 hrs Nitterl 1./ZG76 1137 hrs(no other details 1./ZG76 1139 hrs(no other details) 1./ZG76 1141 hrs(no other details) 1./ZG76 1146 hrs(no other details) 2./ZG76 1135 hrs(no other details) 2./ZG76 1139 hrs(no other details) 2./ZG76 1142 hrs(no other details) Stab./ZG76 1140 hrs(no other details) Stab.III./ZG76 1152 hrs(no other details) 4./ZG76 1144 hrs(type unknown) Heinrich Leitz 5./ZG76 1140 hrs(no other details) 6./ZG76 1140 hrs(no other details) 6./ZG76 1142 hrs(no other details) 6./ZG76 1145 hrs(no other details) Others at night, or by JG51 & JG53 in the south.
