Luftwaffe B-17 interned in Spain
While surfing the Web, I came accross a great Spanish article on Allied/Luftwaffe planes who were interned/crashed on Spanish soil in WWII.
One of the citations is as follows [Translated by moi]; "The 21st of June,1944 the USAF B-17G,sn 42-39969 (401st BG, 614th BS) took off from Kalamata [Greece] commanded by Lt. Wofgang Pohl. It transported three SS agents, an ex-member of the French Foreign Lgion, and an Arab. Its destination was North Africa;to extend its range it carried additional fuel. First it flew to Istres-Le-Tube [Southern France] and from there would go to its destination. After leaving Marseille on June 26th,1944 it had problems with its fuel supply. It had to land at Valencia military airport [Spain] where Pohl destroyed his flight plans and the three Abwehr agents [sic] "disappeared'. The 27th of June 1944 this B-17 of KG-200 with German insignias and the code A3+FB landed at Manises during this special mission. The airplane was interned, remaining separated on a remote site of the airport, with the German insignia covered, until the end of the war. It seems that in 1948 it still was at Manises." Comments, any more observations. |

Interesting is that after the war, this ex401 BG a/c was reclassified as a TB-17G util it was scrapped.
