Mustang III FB148 shot down 9/9/44

Hi guys

The above Mustang was serving with 129 Squadron at Brenzett when I understand it was shot down by AA fire near Appledore (near Tenterden) in Kent. Can anyone confirm this? Who was the pilot? Did he survive?

Cheers
Brian

Brian

There seems to be some level of confusion here. FB148 was a 19Sqn a/c and was lost on this day over Holland. F/Sgt W G Abbott was killed. I cannot immediately find another loss that fits the circumstances you describe.

Steve,
"Appledore" probably mixed up with "Apeldoorn" in The Netherlands.
FB148 hit by light flak from the railway bridge at Zutphen and crashed on the east shore of the River IJssel, about 300 meters from the Flakunit at 13.36 hrs.
W/O W.G. ABBOTT - NZ424401 lies buried at Zutphen.

Regards,
Henk.

Thanks Henk of course! I've got a bad case of "man flu" at the moment so I am a bit slow.

Hi Steve and Henk

Thanks for the info - I thought that might be the case. The error appears in Anthony John Moor's 'Mustang Wing'.

Cheers

And certainly not the Appledore in North Devon, either!
