Luftwaffe bombing German Cities: April 45
Hello,
here 's an interesting article in the german newspaper "Die Zeit" on how the Luftwaffe bombed german inner cities which had just been captured by the Sowjets http://www.zeit.de/2005/16/A-Eberswalde Several waves of Me-110, He-111, Me-109 bombed Eberswalde in the night April. 25/26. Attack lasted one hour, with the use of sky markers, low level runs. No military targets, but the inner city, 389 houses completely destroyed, 1600 damaged. Civilian losses unknown. Same in the city of Anklam, April 29/30. which was set ablaze. Villages in Saxony were bombed because they had the white flag on the church steeple. This was surprising to me (although I have read once that in Berlin street fronts with white flags were strafed by GAF figters). Had the GAF so much resources at this date (aircraft and fuel) for area bombing? One would think that the GAF should have focused on military targets, Oder bridges and such. Who gave the commands which units were involved, the article does only speculate? Thx, P. |
