Luftwaffe losses Belgium 10.06.43

On 10.6.43 the RAF had a mission with 6 Mitchells to the power station at Langerbrugge near Gent, Belgium.

One of the escorting squadrons, No 302 (Polish), claimed 4 Fw-190s shot down 'E. Knokke' around 18.45 hrs. Pilots were Gladych, Krajewski, Sniec and Krzysztofinski.

Who can shed some light what JG had those losses and perhaps even the names of the LW-pilots involved? Crash locations known?

Any info welcome, thanks.

Re: Luftwaffe losses Belgium 10.06.43

My father in law was the Krzysztofinski mentioned in the first post, I have all his wartime flying logs and wonder if it is possible to narrow down which of the Fw190s he shot down. The entery in his log book is very limited and simply lists the plane shot down and aircraft flown.

Harvey
I do not have his combat report at hand, but generally the problem is on the German side, ie. if we have an accurate description of each loss, so we can tie them with claims. I have a note that Krzysztofiński scared another pilot, Krajewski, who thought he was being attacked by a German. Actually it was your father in low closing in from the tail.

Re: Luftwaffe losses Belgium 10.06.43

During ww 2 on 10-06-43, my father was eyewitness of a aircombat above EEKLO (between Ghent and Bruges). One plane was shut down and fell in the surroundings of the watertower. According to information of a member of the resistance, the pilot was "a Hollander", and flew for the Luftwaffe in a converted French plane !?? The same day became a second Dutch aviator missing during the same raid to LANGERBRUGGE, ramrod 80, but flying for the 167 SQN of the RAF; his name P/O C T de IONGH ("Fighter Command Losses" vl 2, p 102, of NORMAN L R FRANKS).
My question: did the Luftwaffe JG 1 have a Dutch pilot in service and converted French planes ?

Re: Luftwaffe losses Belgium 10.06.43

Hi.

The three losses were as listed:

Pissarsky, at unknown location, but as he was later found dead, I would presume people from the research community in Belgium should be able to track the location down maybe in local police records?
http://www.ahs.no/ref_db/lw_loss_pub...?lossid=131201

Rost, left the aircraft in parachute during the fight apparently, location Stuyvenskerke which should be quite accurate (mentioned several times in connection with WWI at least)?
http://www.ahs.no/ref_db/lw_loss_pub...?lossid=130989

Lastly, the aircraft whic made an emergency landing at Hülst
http://www.ahs.no/ref_db/lw_loss_pub...?lossid=131098

In my opinion, if you are able to read German and study the loss records it is often quite possible to narrow down the possibilities and identify the adversaries. The problem usually being time and willingness to do a real effort with regards to gather the necessary sources both locally and in central archives.

It would be very interesting to use this specific case as a test... We know that the locations for two of three losses are recorded, the location for the third one shoyuld also be possible to identify, most likely from local sources (police, grave authorities etc).

So starting out we should probably plot the locations for the losses as we can read them directly:

Stuyvenskerke - the location is easy to find when you find the correct spelling Stuivenskerke, being south west of Brügge in the direction Calais.

Hülst - probably Hulst, this location being much further inland, between Gent and Düsseldorf.

The third loss is at an unknown location, so please our Belgian friends see if you can find any local information!

In my opinion the losses at Stuivenskerke and Hulst does not fit the claim, so the remaining unknown location is probably the most likely.

And BTW, Franek, as we have discussed earlier - the problem is not that the German records are inaccurate - the problem is that they have been destroyed... If we had had access to the combat reports of the German units it would be no problem to identify locations, our problem is that these often very detailed reports was destroyed during and after the war (or are in unaccessible archives in the east).

Regards,
Andreas B
