My articles about the Focke-Wulf 190 A-2 and A-3 with Jagdgeschwader 2

Hi,

I noticed Jim P.'s comments in a recent thread about the lack of discussion about pilots, photo identification, and markings. I agree, it would be good to see more of these kind of discussions on 12OCH.

I was going through some articles I'd been working on a few years ago, and came across the two attached documents. They deal with Jagdgeschwader 2 FW 190 A-2s and A-3s, listing Werk Nummer and Stkz. details, markings, camouflage, losses etc. Both documents are obviously not complete, but they are a start. It was actually some J.G. 2 loss material Jim P. sent me back in 2002 that provided one of the starting points for both of these documents.

The Excel file lists ca. 180 FW 190 A-2s and A-3s operated by Jagdgeschwader 2. This file includes details on camo and markings (which is not my area of knowledge, so I've probably made some mistakes), pilots, aircraft histories, and details about sources of information for each aircraft.

The Word document lists FW 190 A-2s and A-3s coming into and out of Jagdgeschwader 2. It also includes a list of known FW 190 A-2s and A-3s operated by Jagdgeschwader 2, listed by aircraft codes, and by Werk Nummer.

I hope that these two documents are of interest, and I would really appreciate additional information to make these articles more complete. I'm sure other members of the board would have additional information about Jagdgeschwader 2 FW 190 A-2s and A-3s, for example from sources I haven't consulted like the new Prien series, Nauroth's J.G. 2 photo history, or the Eagle Editions book about Hans "Assi" Hahn.

Any additional information to make these documents more complete would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Andrew A.

I believe the reason is in almost non existent research on particular aircraft, and quite limited photo coverage. The latter may seem strange, but if you will try to look for particular pilots, combats or periods, quite often you would not find anything. Another thing is access to archival stuff, which in such research is limited mostly to log books, in majority held in private hands.

I have an Fw 190A-2, WNr 0224 as 15% during a landing incident at Fl.Pl Blagnac (on non operations) on 3.7.43 whilst serving with JagdGr Ost... [ex-III./JG 2, damaged 30.7.42, Nr. 156 in the Db]

Will keep looking

Another one:

7.7.1943 an Fw 190A-3 of II./JG 2 had a landing accident near Montans (non-operational) and was 30% damaged. The WNr was 496, though I don't know if it was a 120 or 130 block a/c

Maybe someone with a better database or my expansive library will help on these two

Great work Andrew. Don't know if you've included Jagdfligerverbande material here, if not that should help. Three machines from photos - Mayer had at least 2 different 190A-2/3s 'white 7' with 7.Sta., WNr. 5257 'gelbe 7' and WNr. 5270 'gelbe 5' from 9.Sta. The former is from a photo in Ries (and probably Jagdfligerverbande), the later in a Japanese LW photo book from Tank Magazine.
