11 or 12 May 1940 2(F)./123 Do17

Hi!
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to Ruy and all the (other) contributors to 12 O'Clock High !

Some months ago there was a request for information regarding a crash in Belgium during May 1940 (http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=7464)
Is it possible to receive a confirmation that the plane w/nr.147 4U+EK crashed at Fosse-La-Ville (Belgium) or at Schinnen (The Netherlands) ? Which was the correct date 11 or 12 May 1940 ?
Was it Hans Weicksel or Weiksel or Weichsel ? As he was wounded he was possibly liberated later in the war and returned to his unit. Could it be the same person as Hptm Hans Weicksel (born 16/04/1915) and died on 3/06/1942 and buried at Champigny-St.Andre (France, Block 17 Reihe 22, Grab 1181) ?

Many thanks and best regards

Luc

Hptm Hans-Georg Weicksel was in a Bf 108 Wk Nr 3021/VK+WU of Stab/KG 6 shot down by 401 Sqn near Gamaches 3 Jun 42. Bournot was still with 2/123 (as an Oblt) at the end (Sep 44)

...and according to the NVM, Weicksel, born 16 Apr 15 in Leipzig, was killed 3 Jun 42 so he is the same person

Chris and Pieter,

Many thanks for your replies.
Due to the fact that the name is not identical I don't know if the person who was killed aboard the Bf108 in 1942 was the same as the one which made a crashlanding during May 1940.
The information which Chris supplied is very complete, but the information regarding the May 1940 doesn't mention when Oblt.Hans Weichsel was born.

Best regards

Luc

Re: 11 or 12 May 1940 2(F)./123 Do17

Hello,

There are several photos known of 4U+EK down at Mettet, Belgium, including one that recently sold on eBay to the sudek organization. This aircraft/crew is also written up by Arnaud Gillet in the first volume of his "French Victories" series. He reports the location as "3 KM NE of Fosses," which didn't come up on my mapquest search, but which I presume is near Mettet. Besides the location difference, the photos are of the same aircraft.

However, are any photos known to exist of the second aircraft mentioned by Pieter in his post, "Do-17P 4U+HK of 2.(F)/123" that landed at "SCHINNEN (gehucht ‘t ROOTH, Limburg, NL)" on May 11th. Does anyone know the condition of the aircraft?

Thanks for any assistance.

Hi Larry,

The fact that the three crew members were only wounded suggests the aircraft made a (more or less) controlled landing, although probably resulting in a write-off. I have no percentage report on the damage.

And yes, there should be pictures, but unfortunately I haven't found them. Are equally interested in a copy of those.

Regards, Pieter

Hello,
I've posted other pictures of the DO-17 WnR 147 crashed near Fosses-la-Ville.
http://forum.12oclockhigh.net/showthread.php?t=7464
BTW that plane did not crash in Mettet which is located South of Fosses.
In fact the plane crashed between Sart-Saint-Laurent and Taravisee (first crossroads North of Fosses)
Regards
Yves
