P-38 Units in the ME/NA/Italy in 1944 ?

hello,

What P-38 Units were in the ME/NA/Italian Areas in 1944 ?

I have the 1st , 14th 82nd Fighter Groups
and the 3rd and 5th PRG's.

Did the 8th or 9th AAF's have ops over Northern Italy apart from the 8th PR Groups Frantic missions ?

What other P-38 Units were there in those ares in 1944 if any ?

Thanks

Alex

Re: P-38 Units in the ME/NA/Italy in 1944 ?

Hi Alex,

There was a unit called the 'Fighter Training Center'. It was based in Morocco and Algeria from February 1943 to July 1944. It had several types of fighter, including P-38s. I believe it served like a British OTU, honing the skills of young pilots just assigned to the MTO and teaching them combat techniques. The instructors were battle-tested pilots.

While I have not done any real research yet on this unit I have found any information very hard to come by. The phrase "Hen's teeth" comes to mind !

Regards,

Martin Gleeson.

Re: P-38 Units in the ME/NA/Italy in 1944 ?

Dear Alex,

Just returned from Maxwell AFB and spent time delving through the AAF accident reports. I found many on P-38s in Italy. But I was only interested in Beufighter reports, therefore, did not make copies of any P-38s incidents.

Two months ago you requested information on KIA RCAF members. Send me an e-mail with a listing of the names and I will provide all the information on these veterans.

Hello Norman,

Thank you for your responce.
I did place a question about the loss of the Beaufighter Website that seems to have folded.

And I posted questions on canadian Hurricane's

But it is Alex Crawford that is interested in the RCAF KIA's. Check the Members list and the thread is there and you can also contact him direct.

Thanks again
Alex
