Stuka Crew Lost Over England?

Hi,

Could anyone provide details over the loss of the following flight crew. I believe they were crew members from Stuka squadrons but I could be wrong:

Obergefreiter Josef Stillinger (Bordfunker) killed on the 25th July 1940 on his 34 combat mission;

Gefreiter Josef Schiehandl killed on the 8th October 1940 in a flying death;

and

Herbert Daigl killed on the 13th August 1940

Many thanks

Rick

Re: Stuka Crew Lost Over England?

Hello Rick,

Obergefreiter Josef STILLINGER was Bordfunker of a Junkers Ju87B of 8./StG1 shot down by RAF fighters 45 km north of Cherbourg on 25th July 1940. His pilot was rescued unhurt but STILLINGER was never found.

Sorry but I seem to have no record of Gefreiter Josef SCHIEHANDL killed on 8th October 1940.

Gefr Herbert DAIGL was Bordfunker aboard the Junkers Ju88A of 6./LG1 that crashed on take-off from Orleans-Bricy on 13th August 1940. He was buried at Fort-de-Malmaison Block 4, Row 25, Grave 983.

Thanks Peter,

Do you know who the pilot was who was saved whilst Obergefreiter died?

Re: Stuka Crew Lost Over England?

Rick,

No I'm sorry. He was obviously uninjured and thus not reported in the relevant German records.

Re: Stuka Crew Lost Over England?

Hi again,

Concerning Gefreiter Josef Schiehandl in Battle of Britain Then & Now pg 680 there is mention of a collision between two stuka aircraft belonging to 12/LG1 where the crew from L1+MW were killed. Could he be the NCO killed in that accident?

Rick

Re: Stuka Crew Lost Over England?

Rick,

Yes he was. He was Bordfunker to Lt Werner SCHLEGEL of 12.(St)/LG1 who was also killed following a collision over Marles-les-Mines, south of Lillers, on October 8, 1940.
