2 Junkers 290 shot down 16th Feb 1944
Hi
This is my first time on this forum as i have drawn a blank with some research into an incident in WW11 on 16th Feb 1944 and am hoping that some of your members can help. On this date Wildcats from HMS Biter on convoy duty in the Atlantic shot down a Junkers 290 just after 10am and then in the afternoon another JU290 was shot down this time by a Beafighter directed by HMS Biter. I am really keen to know the exact identity of the two JU290's that were shot down, where they were based, the crews and whether any crew from either plane survived. Any info or pointers would be appreciated. Cheers Chris |

Chris
Many thanks, all the info i was after in a matter of hours. Your kind help is very much appreciated. Just two points. Firstly is it possible to determine the base from which 235 Squadron were operating and secondly is there any reason why one Junkers had a crew of ten and the other a crew of eleven? Cheers Chris |

Re: 2 Junkers 290 shot down 16th Feb 1944
Cordes, who was a Technical Official, was probably a passenger and 235 sqn was based at Portreath

Re: 2 Junkers 290 shot down 16th Feb 1944
It was 235 Sqn's detachment at St Angelo who was responsible. Would very much like to know the serial number of the Beaufighter. The ORB does not list it.

Re: 2 Junkers 290 shot down 16th Feb 1944
Hello Chris, Tony and Bailey.
This thread interested me because there is an Oblt Kurt Baumgartner on the crew of the Ju 290 A-5, 9V+DK, Wk Nr 0177 of 2/FAG 5 whose captain was Hptm Karl-Friedrich Bergen. Do you have more information about this airman? Was he the Beobachter? Chris Goss, do you have his LW service number or any information about his backgrounds? ( If he served with other LW recon units, for example )? I am gathering information about the Baumgartners in the Second World War and would appreciate any new information about this airman. Thanks for both of you Adriano Baumgartner |
