Re: Who shot down....................?

Hi, Brian!

Where did you get this dates?

As regards to Lidia Litwyak, she was shot down or shot up three times in July-August 1943 by german fighters: 16.07.; 21.07.; 01.08.1943. The last case ended in her death.
Time and place of her last combat correspond several claims made by I/JG52 pilots. It is not clear, since all this claims are against IL-2s. So, I presume plane type misidentification here.

Budanova lost her life in airial combat on July 19, 1943. Apparantly she was shot down by II/JG3's Ofw. Hans Frese.

Regards,
Nikita

Re: Who shot down....................?

Hello Brian and Nikita,

Hans Frese did not have the rank of Ofw at that time. He still was a Feldwebel. On 19 July 1943 he claimed a LaGG-3 in 88259 at 15.44 hours. Is this near Hryhorikva? Is more info on this incident available??

On the internet I found that she flew alone and engaged two Me 109's. She claimed one shot down and was then shot down herself. Could het claim be Uffz Helmuth Schirra of 4./ JG 3. He was shot down in combat with IL-2 in 88239 (2 km east of Dmitirjewka). Schirra is still MIA.. . . .

Best regards,
Rob

What was she doing flying alone? That's unusual. Perhaps an armed recce mission?

P.S. I assume Hryhorikva is actually Grigoreyevka. How far was this from Kuybishevo? There were several claims filed by Rumanian '109 fighter pilots against Yaks and LaGGs on that day.

Unless the source could be verified, I would be very cautious. Soviet propaganda provided thousands of fake accounts, even when not necessary.

Re: Who shot down....................?

Franek,

Text is:
On July 19, 1943, during a solo combat with three Bf 109, she shot down one, but was shot down herself and killed near the town of Antracit in Luhansk Oblast.

Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katya_Budanova

Any thoughts..?

Best regards
Rob

Re: Who shot down....................?

Rob,

Operational documents indicate Budanova's last combat in the area of Petrovskoje (appr. 20 km north-west of Antracit). However, this could be the task area of flight. As german claims all gained in Q. 882.., that is substantially south to the place in question.
Off course she was not flying alone, another soviet plane was lost in that combat.

BR.
