Re: Looking for Allied claims MTO on these DATES

David,

19-9-43 Me109 destroyed, Mersah Matruh. All claims seem to be in Italy around this date; I can find nothing in North Africa for the RAF, USAAF, or the French.
21-4-44 Ju88 destroyed, Mersah Matruh. 336 Sqn, 1305-1325, 70 m N of Mersa Metruh. F/O Georgios Tsotsos Spit Vb LZ807 + P/O Dimitrios Soufrilas Spit Vc JL352.
25-4-44 Ju88 destroyed, Alexandria. 41 SAAF Sqn, 1800, NW of Idku. Lt. Mauritz Herman Hartogh Spit IX MA257/X + Lt. John Conrad Silberbauer Spit IX LZ894/V
29-4-44 Ju88 destroyed, Cyprus. 213 Sqn, 0612-0722, 10 m SW of Cape Greco to 5 m S of Cape Gatta. Sgt. E A Stringer Spit IX MA526/V
14-5-44 Ju88 destroyed, Sidi Barrani. 255 Sqn, May 15, 0421, anti-recce patrol, area of `Moustache' (haven't tracked down where that is yet). F/O Donald Sidney Pinks (p) + F/Sgt Maurice Noble (RO), Beaufighter VIf (no serial given)
24-6-44 Ju88 destroyed, Cyprus. 41 SAAF, 1814-1937, Cyprus to Turkey. Capt. Raymond Ponsonby Burl, Spit I LZ894/V
5-9-44 Ju88 destroyed, Alexandria. Beaufighter ? (uncertain) 255 Sqn, Sept 4, 2300/4-0035/5, scramble from Falconara (don't know where that is either), claimed as Ju-188 damaged only. F/Sgt D Fisher (p) + W/O J Walsh (RO), Beau VIf (no serial given)

Frank.

I wouldn't swear to it Frank, but I think I've seen MOUSTACHE as the codename of a GCI station, rather than a place or a patrol zone.

Re: Looking for Allied claims MTO on these DATES

Thank you very much Frank, your info has saved me a lot of time.

Can you help with any details of the RAF Fighter claims for the 10-9-43 over Italy, thats if they made any, I have all the U.S. claims(from you book on MTO U.S. claims) AND F.A.A. claims. So any help would be great.

Best Wishes

David

Re: Looking for Allied claims MTO on these DATES

Dear David,

Two RAF Spitfire squadrons were involved in combat on 10 September 1943. 0940-1200 over Salerno 154 Squadron met four Bf 109s. Flt Lt W.I.H.Maguire claimed two shot down; Flt Sgt N.S.Ewart was MIA.
Same area 111 Squadron encountered two FW 190s; one claimed by Flg Off I.F.Kennedy and Sgt H.S. Eccleston jointly.
You say you already have the Fleet Air Arm Seafire claims.
You will find notes on Maguire and Kennedy in 'Aces High', and Eccleston in 'Those Other Eagles'. 'Hap' Kennedy also wrote an excellent autobiography, 'Black Crosses off my Wingtip'.

Francis
