HE111 Crash Photo

I was wondering if anybody might be able to tell me anything about this photo of a crashed He111 that sold on ebay yesterday:

Item 390095025077
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...fvi%3D1&_rdc=1

There seems to have been two photos of the same aircraft, one showing the codes which seemed to be ?4+OV

The photo seems to have been taken an occupied area as there are German troops around the aircraft.

Any information would be great.

Re: HE111 Crash Photo

Many thanks for the reply.

Can you tell that from the markings near the cockpit, or from the serial?

If the rest of the code is "OV" is it possible to work out a Squadron? Would "V" be the Squadron code and "O" the letter within the unit?

Is it possible to date the aircraft at all (from the Mk of the aircraft) or could anybody suggest where it might have been taken. I googled KG1 and found mentions of the unit in Russia and was wondering if this might have been taken during the Russian campaign, or if it might be earlier or later.

Re: HE111 Crash Photo

The unit is definitely 2./KG 1 in the 1940 period. The idiosyncratic code combined with the distinctive insignia indicates this. The codes are that of a IV. Gruppe which is a carry-over from when the unit was IV./KG 152. The insignia is proven to be of this Gruppe thanks to in-flight pics of He 111s displaying the codes and the insignia at the same time.

The insignia and code idiosyncrasies are described in our book "Bomber Units of the Luftwaffe".

Re: HE111 Crash Photo

Judging by the engine, it must be an H-1.

Re: HE111 Crash Photo

Many thanks for the help and comments with this so far.

If we can assume it is an HE111 of 2./KG 1 in the 1940 period would it be possible to work out the actual aircraft and the date of the crash?

Here is the other photo.
