Hptm Werner Langemann,I./JG 11

HI all

I am looking for some info on Hptm Werner Langemann, G.Kdr I./JG 11 24.6.44 - 14.7.44.
What was his function and assignment before 24.6.1944? Can anyone tell?
Thanks

Re: Hptm Werner Langemann,I./JG 11

LANGEMANN, Werner. 01.02.42 Oblt., appt Staka 10.(Jabo)/JG 53 (to 31.08.42). 01.09.42 Oblt., appt Staka Jabo-Gruppe Afrika. 1942-43 in I./Schl.G. 2. 1943-44 in SG 101. 1944 in III./ZG 76. 24.06.44 Hptm., appt Kdr. I./JG 11 (to 14.07.44 PoW).

This is not as clear as it could be in terms of specifically answering your question, but it may help at least some.

Re: Hptm Werner Langemann,I./JG 11

Peter -

It is now more clear as to who was who. Hermann Langemann was the Schlachtflieger while Werner Langemann was the Jagdflieger. However, I still do not know with certainty which one was with ZG 76 in 1944. Someone must have the answer to this and be able to substantiate it with good sources.

LANGEMANN, Hermann. c. 19.11.42 Oblt., appt Kdr. I./Schl.G. 2 (to 05.43?). 05.43 Oblt., appt Kdr. II./SG 101 (to 09.43?). c.29.01.44 appt (acting?) Kdr. III./ZG 76 (to 21.03.44). c.21.03.44 appt Kdr. I./ZG 76 (to c.24.07.44). 01.04.44 promo to Hptm.(DAL/A1). 08.44 Hptm. and once again Kdr. II./SG 101.

LANGEMANN, Werner. 01.02.42 Oblt., appt Staka 10.(Jabo)/JG 53 (to 31.08.42). 01.09.42 Oblt., appt Staka Jabo-Gruppe Afrika. 1944 in III./ZG 76. 24.06.44 Hptm., appt Kdr. I./JG 11 (to 14.07.44 PoW).

Supporting Evidence:

Lw.-Dienstaltersliste A 1 August 1944 has just one Langemann and that is Hermann.
Lw.-Dienstaltersliste A 1 1945 has just one Langemann:
Langemann, Hermann - promoted to Hptm. 01.04.44(1b).

LANGEMANN, Werner.
Prien (JG 53/1:465) says he was appointed Staka of the new 10.(Jabo)/JG 53 at the beginning of February 1942.
Prien (JG 53/1:467) Photo #448 is a very good shot of Werner Langemann that shows an evidently tall, muscular, blondish good-looking pilot climbing out of a Bf 109.
Prien (JG 53/2:597) simply mentions that Werner Langemann took over the new Jabo-Gruppe “Afrika” when it was formed about 31 August 1942 or 1 September 1942.
Prien (JG 1 & 11/2:1042) says under the date of 25.06.44, “Hptm. Werner Langemann, the new Kommandeur of I./JG 11, arrived in Beille. Langemann came from JG 53 and had initially led a Jabostaffel and later the Jabo-Gruppe Süd in the Mediterranean area during 1942-43 where he was able to score 8 victories. He took over command of I./JG 11 from Oblt. Fritz Engau.”
Prien (JG 1 & 11/2:1071) describes how during combat with 4 Spitfires near Cérisy on 14.07.44 Hptm. Werner Langemann was shot down at very low altitude. Although wounded, he managed to bail out at 50 meters and survive the landing, but with further injuries. Landing near an antiaircraft battery, he was captured and later interrogated (see ADI(K) Report No. 369/1944 dated 21.07.44).

LANGEMANN, Hermann.
Pegg (Hs 129 Panzerjäger:172) confirms that Hermann Langemann was the Schlachtflieger and Kommandeur of II./SG 101 in August 1944.

Hope that helps.

Larry
