Mylius KG55 Greif - HELP -

Hi,

I am looking for more information on Knigthscross holder Wilhelm Mylius and his crew. Can someone identify his crewmembers??

He flew in 6./KG55 Greif.

He was downed with his He111 behind enemy lines and managed to get back with his crew and 12 russion prisoners. For this action he got his knights cross.

Martin

Hi Martin,

Luft. Qm's returns issued on 30-9-41 has the following He111H-6 G1+AC II/KG55 missing on 22-9-41 Ff Ltn Gustav Weyer, B Oblt Wilhelm Mylius, Bf Fw Franz Fischer ( hard to make out the surname the KG55 history by Wolfgag Dierich has Schiffer ) Bm Uffz Werner Schmidhelm, Bs Ogef Max Giedau (Dierich has Bledau ). Someone might be able to confirm surnames of the Bf and Bs. The Dierich book, published in German, pages 203 to 218 covers the nine day march back to German lines of the crew,

Regards

Hi Martin,

Here are some pictures and the names of the crew members (according to the report I have). I have more pictures; however, they are attached to the report. I have to scan the hole pages and then cut them.

The Names: Lt. Weyer : Ff (Flugzeugführer)
Oblt. Mylius : B (Beobachter)
Fw. Schiffer : Bf (Bordfunker)
Uffz. Schindhelm : Bw (Bordwart)
Ogfr. Bledau : Bs (Flg.-Bordschütze)

Regards,

Franz

Re: Mylius KG55 Greif - HELP -

Franz,

I am very interested by the partial view of the He111 in the background of the centre photo you have kindly provided us with. If my eyes do not deceive me, there appears to be a dark band circling the forward fuselage, immediately behind the main canopy glazing. It is most noticeable on the pale blue undersurface, too.

I recall seeing a coloured plate in a book many years ago, showing the forward fuselage of an He111, with the KG55 'Griffon' emblem. However, this was not the usual rendition. Rather than being a red griffon on a white shield, positioned on the fuselage side behind the glazing, in what we may call its 'usual' position, it was instead gold or yellow in colour, without a shield, and positioned underneath the glazing where the pilot would sit, just forward of the wing root, and it was shown super-imposed on a red band.

Is there any possibility that the machine we see in your photo had this arrangement for the unit emblem? Would you or anyone else be able to shed light on this for me, and also - if possible - provide any information as to the colours of the propellor spinner band, any specific unit codes and perhaps the sub-type of He111? I've always thought it would make an excellent modelling subject, hence my interest.

Many thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

Kindest regards,

Paul
