Do18 2/606 crashed 6 September 1939

Hi guys

I'm seeking identities of the crew of this aircraft that crashed on return from a sortie over the North Sea.

Cheers
Brian

Re: Do18 2/606 crashed 6 September 1939

Brian,

could this be on the 3th of september?
I've got a Do 18 (M2+GK) of 2./106 that emergency-landed of Terschelling after an onboard explosion!
It taxied to Borkum the next day.
And also, nothing on the crew.

Re: Do18 2/606 crashed 6 September 1939

Brian,

Nothing on September 6, 1939, but I have the following listed on the following day:

2./KüFlGr. 606 Dornier Do18D-3 (833). Starboard plane and flaps damaged in night landing on the Wittensee in fog 9.30 p.m. Crew all unhurt. Aircraft 8L+GK repairable.

2./KüFlGr. 606 Dornier Do18D-3 (833). Diverted from the Wittensee by fog and overturned during night landing at Hörnum 10.04 p.m. BO Oberlt zur See Helmut Rabach missing, BM Uffz Karl Evers killed, FF Uffz Ernst Hinrichs badly injured, and HB Hptgefr Herbert Rusch slightly injured. Aircraft 8L+WK 95% damaged - write-off.

I assume the latter could be that you are after. And if anybody can clarify the duplicated Werk Nummer I would be grateful.

Thanks Bas and Peter

I'm confident that it was 8L+WK

I've got M2+IK (W.Nr. 723) - which one is correct?
Additionally in Q.M.6. under 25 IX there is a small note: "in Meldung von 4.9. als vermißt gemeldetes Flugzeug ist abgestürst" referring to Do.18 lost on 3 IX and piloted by Oblt.d.R. Georg Müßig (all crew marked as KIA). Is it the same plane as above or different one??

To what Peter already mentioned I can only add that Ernst Hinrichs died two days later out of wounds.

Peter - where did you get data on 8L+GK? I'm looking for the lost and damaged seaplanes in September 1939 so I'm deeply interested in the data which you have kindly provided!

Re: Do18 2/606 crashed 6 September 1939

Andrzej,

The source I used is "Illusies en Incidenten" about pre-war Holland.
The crew of M2+GK was mentioned in the notes.

Oblt. Wilde,
Fw. Hahn,
Fw. Willi, and
Uffz. Niesgodka

So it lookes like a different a/c and aircrew

Re: Do18 2/606 crashed 6 September 1939

Bas,

There were two losses on September 3, 1939, that I currently have listed as follows:

2./KüFlGr.106 Dornier Do18G-1. Ditched in sea north of Terschelling due to onboard explosion. BO Oberlt zur See Hans Wilde injured, FF Fw Hermann Hahn, Fw[ ]Willi, and Uffz[ ]Niesgodka all unhurt. Aircraft M2+GK 20% damaged but repairable – taxied to Borkum next day.

2./KüFlGr. 106 Dornier Do18G-1. Crashed at Baltrum, cause not stated. FF Uffz Friedrich Römermann, BO Oberlt zur See Georg Müßig, BF Uffz Martin Schubert, and BM Uffz Ludwig Utzmeier all killed. Aircraft M2+JK 100% write-off.

Andrzej,

KTBs of various KüFlGr units survive and are held at BMA Freiburg in the RM118 series, copies also being obtainable from NARA microfilm T1022. There was a TOCH thread detailing them in August 2005. You have to check each of them thoroughly, not just the unit you are interested in, as they often contain details of losses to subordinate or neighbouring units etc. KTBs of the ObdM and FdL East & West are also good sources held by the same archives.

Re: Do18 2/606 crashed 6 September 1939

Hi Pete and Bas,

thank you very much for interesting additions!
Though if I may I have two additional questions:
- W.Nr. 723 is it M2+GK or M2+JK?
- I'm afraid that the eldest posts to which I have access are from April 2009. What shall I do to see earlier posts?

All the best,
Andrzej

Andrzej,

Sorry, I don't have the answer to your last two questions....
