Raid on Gosport 16 August 1940

Hi,

On the 16 August 1940 the Fleet Air Arm airfield at Gosport was bombed by the Luftwaffe. Among the losses on the ground were three Hawker Audax, K7369, K7371 and K7403.

Was this a daylight raid or a nightime raid?

Does anyone have details of the German aircraft/units involved in this raid?

Any help would be appreciated.

Alex

Re: Raid on Gosport 16 August 1940

"At 1300 hours, a heavy dive bombing attack was made on Lee-on-Solent Naval Air Station; several hangars were destroyed and other building suffered damage by fire and blast. Some aircraft were lost and the water main cut in three places. At about the same time, Grange RAF Station, Gosport, was bombed and a series of fires destroyed one hangar and damaged two others. All fires are now under control but casualties are reported to be seven killed and fifteen injured."

Re: Raid on Gosport 16 August 1940

Hi,

The serial numbers came from 'The K File, The Royal Air Force of the 1930's' by Air-Britain Publications. It's a much improved work on the RAF Serials K1000-K9999 also by Air Britain.

I believe there is a FAA book that deals with aircraft used during WWII also by Air Britain, but I don't have that one yet.
