Information on Franz Menzel of ZG2,JG77,JG5.

Hi

I am hoping sombody can tell me if this officer who claimed with 3./ZG2, 3./JG77, 14./JG77 and 5./JG5 became Staffelkapitan of 9./JG77 in November 1944. I believe these "Menzel's" are the same guy, who made at least seven or eight claims, and seems to have survived the war. A Date of Birth/Death would be very welcome.

A review of our files shows:

MENZEL, Franz. 02.41 Lt., (acting?) Staka 3./JG 77. 25.01.42 Oblt., appt Staka 5./JG 5 (to 11.42). 11.42 Oblt., appt Staka 3./JG 5. 05.43 Oblt., with BFS 10. 11.44 Hptm., appt Staka 9./JG 77 (to 04.45).

However, there appears to be no Menzel associated with ZG 2. Perhaps you may be thinking of:

MESSNER, Reinhold. 03.09.40 Oblt. and Techn.Offz. I./ZG 2 PoW - shot down by Spitfires of 19 and 222 Squadrons and crashed at Stowmaries. 01.06.43 previously in I./ZG 2, promo to Hptm.

Our files are limited only to those officers who held a position or held a rank of Hptm. or higher so perhaps the one that you want does not fit this criteria.
