Crash (?) of 1./KFlGr906 at 5th September 1941

Dear all,

I'v some old notes concerning a crash (?) at 5th September 1941 of an unknown type (either Ju 88 or He 115) of 1./KFlGr906 at grid 5355. One crew member Oblt Wolfgang Herwartz was WIA.

Above info should be at the GQM list at 7th September 1941. I'm not confident if above info is correct, as 1./KFlGr906 wasn't allocated in Holland at that date. I'm also not sure about the grid. If this represents the Jägermeldenetzverfahren or Luftwaffe Planquadrathe, then it should be in the southern part of the IJsselmeer, if the Marinequadrathen are used, the crashplace must be somewhere at the North Sea, halfway between Scotland and Norway.

Anyway, I hope somebody is able to check above entry in the GQM lists to see if there's any transcription error in unit or location.

Thanks in advance,
Hans Nauta

On September 5, 1941 the Küstenfliegerstaffel 1./906 was based in Hourtin, France, and equipped with Heinkel He 115. The Staffel was subordinated to Küstenfliegergruppe 406 in Brest.

QM's returns dated 7-9-41 does show Oblt. Wolfgang Herwartz of 1/906 as wounded due to Feindbeschuss in Pl.Qu.5355 on the 5-9-41, under a Luftflotte 3 heading. No aircraft details are shown so I assume under 10% aircraft damage. and the Tony Woods site shows no combat or claims for the 5th. The QM's list does not indicate a later correction, could the aircraft have been hit by ships AA?

Hello Brian, Ed and Seaplanes,

Thank you all for the added details and thoughts. As Brian indicated, it turns out now that Oblt Herwartz wasn't involved in a crash.

Another mystery solved!

Best wishes,
Hans Nauta
