Missing Gunner

Gents,

On Sept 2/3rd 1942 a mid upper gunner of No.218 squadron bailed-out on route to Karlsruhe after his Stirling ( HA-A ) was attacked by a E/A. The ORB and Combat Report records this gunner as Sgt S.V Reeves. I cannot find him in "Footprints on the sand of time" by Oliver Clutton-Brook or on the CWG register, also he does not appear to be an Evader. I do not have his service number ( ORB did not record NCO postings at this time) This has been bothering me for a few years now. !!!!

Any pointers PLEASE !!!!

Steve

Re: Missing Gunner

Hi Steve

Hoping this isn't a dumb question but I'm sure you'll have a copy of 218's ORB, so have you checked that it's not a typo with 'Reeves'? Is he recorded as having flown on previous ops?

Cheers

Ian

Hi Ian & Alex,

Thanks for the reply, Reeves is recorded within the ORB on a number of occassions and his surname is the same throughout. I had checked the 1939-1945 PoW listing and found Reeves S but was concerned that there was no Reeves S within the pages of Oliver Clutton-Brock books. At the time of his loss he, S V Reeves had flown 19 operations with F/Lt Johnny Du Toit RAFVR.

I can only suggest that Reeves surname was mispelt on joining the squadron and this carried on throughout his time on the squadron, a long shot I know. Even if this happened, there are no NCO PoW's from No.218 Squadron that fit. !!
