MACR P38 crashed around Salerno?

We received informations about P38 Lightning crashed 9 september 1943 50 km south of Salerno. Day is not sure, can be some other day of sept 1943. Aircraft crashed but pilot jump.
Someone can find MACR for us? Thanks.

Re: MACR P38 crashed around Salerno?

Regarding the two P-38s that went down on 9-9-43.
Both 693 for 42-13411 and 698 for 43-2155 report that the planes went down 30 miles East of Agropoli Italy. They were strafing a 400 vehicle convoy on the road. The pilot for 42-13411 was seen to bail out. The pilot of 43-2155 was apparently killed in the crash of his plane.

Re: MACR P38 crashed around Salerno?

Hi,

Do you have any info on the fate of the pilot ?

A MACR would only be filled if a pilot went missing. If the loss took place 50 km south of Salerno, the area was occupied by Allied troops some days later and so the pilot may have been recovered, either dead or alive, before a MACR was created for him.

In this case you will have to check the combat reports of the P-38 units operating in this area.

Many thanks. From witnessings I know pilot bailed out but I not know if he was taken POW or rescued from USA infantry in zone. I also know that P38 was shot down from german fighters aircraft. Do you can help me to find MACR or combat report that can have this informations? Thank again!
