All Danes and Fins

For those of you out there that live in either Denmark or Finland, rather an odd request but over New Year I'm looking at heading to Denmark and Finland for a bit of a break before heading to the PRO at Kew. What I want to know is what sort of things are open at this time of year. As a cursory nod to my archaeology degree I want to go see Tollund man (for all you Danes) so any advice on that would be welcome while Finland - even in winter - is somewhat of an attraction for the sake of going. I will be meeting up with my parents and they want to visit all the artsy-fartsy things like the palace in Copehagen, etc. So any suggestions on where to go/what to see (squashed into a a one week period per country) would be most appreciated!

Cheers

Adam

Re: All Danes and Fins

Hello

It depends on Your intrests. In National Museum (Kansallismuseo) there many artifacts from stone ages onwards. There is Finnish Aviation Museum very near the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and another some 300km nortwards at Tikkakoski at Jyväskylä Airport (Bf 109G, Bell P-39 Airacobra, Fokker XXI, Il-28 etc). In Helsinki there is of course artmuseums, Military Museum, some bouldergraves, but if You want to see real interesting old age graves, I must admit, that the Danes have better ones. In and around Helsinki there is architectually interesting building and splendid nature if You like forests, lakes or archipelago. Of course it can be really freezing around New Year up here, especially in archipelago. Etc...So drop a PM to me if You want more detailed info.

Juha

Re: All Danes and Fins

Adam,
I would agree with Graham about the Viking Ship Museeum in Roskilde (http://www.vikingeskibsmuseet.dk/), and at the same time make a tour of the Roskilde Cathedral where many all Danish kings and queens are buried (http://www.roskildedomkirke.dk/dk/).

Regarding WW2/military/aircraft interests, I would pass the Museum of Danish Resistance 1940-45 (http://www.nationalmuseet.dk/sw10155.asp) and the Technical Museum, Aircraft Collection in Elsinore (http://www.tekniskmuseum.dk/, nothing much in english: chose "Samlingerne" and "Flysamlingen..")

If Tollund-manden (http://www.silkeborgmuseum.dk/), not exactly near Copenhagen) is of interest, I would also pass the National Museeum (www.nationalmuseet.dk). And if in Jutland to see Tollund manden, why not pass Aarhus and Grauballe manden (http://moesgaard.hum.au.dk/my.php?top=13&language=1).

That was just a few suggestions, which did not include: Kronborg in Elsinore, the royal palaces and many other odd places.

Regards,

Mikkel Plannthin, Copenhagen
