Ju 88 loss near Bayreuth on 25 November 1944
According to Michael Balss book "Deutsche Nachtjagd Personalverluste in Ausbildung und Einsatz - fliegendes Personal", on 25 November 1944, a Ju 88 G-1 WNr 4909 of 1./NJG 101 crashed near Bayreuth due to icing during a non-operational flight. The pilot, Hptm Fritz Mang, was killed while the two other crew bailed out and were unhurt (and so their names were not recorded).
I have found an article on the Web saying that (in 2005) it as planned to set a memorial for a nightfighter pilot that crashed on this date in Mehlmeisel, close to Bayreuth. http://www.oberpfalznetz.de/zeitung/...26-P5,1,0.html The loss above is the only one I found in the Bayreuth area, so I guess it is the same. http://www.maplandia.com/germany/bay...th/mehlmeisel/ Can someone confirm that this memorial was erected since the article, and if the name(s) of the pilot/crew are written on it ? A picture of the memorial will be a nice bonus if someone has one. Thanks in advance |
