Crashed Junkers Ju88 On Channel Coast?

On eBay here there is a crashed Ju88A of KG 30. I am sure that I have seen the photo before. The seller claims the photo to be at Enfield. If this is correct then presumably the Ju88 has ditched in one of the reservoirs in Enfield borough. Any further details appreciated.

Ian

You are misreading the caption.
The seller claims it is down on the Channel coast and that the soldier is pointing to where he hit it with his Enfield rifle.

Re: Crashed Junkers Ju88 at Enfield?

While we are being pedantic, the "trusty #4 Enfield rifle" would be a Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I.

Thanks for the correction Mark, I foolishly had not looked at the description below the photo which explained it was the rifle and not the London borough!

9 September 1940: Stab III./KG30 Junkers Ju88A-1 (0333). Sortied to attack London but engaged by Spitfires of No. 602 Squadron and both engines disabled. Believed that attacked by S/L A.V.R. Johnstone and P/O A. Lyall. Then attacked by F/O P.C. Webb and ditched in the sea off Pagham 5.50 p.m. FF Major Johannes Hackbarth (Gruppenkommandeur) and BO Oberfw Hans Manger both captured badly wounded, BF Uffz Willi Sawallisch and BS Gefr Friedrich Petermann both killed. Aircraft 4D+AD 100% write-off.

Re: Crashed Junkers Ju88 On Channel Coast?

A copy of a print of an image taken by photographer Frank L'Alouette.

Whilst the image has appeared elsewhere many times, I have an original print and the original negative, plus others of the same episode, given me by the photographer's family.

I cannot claim copyright, but this kind of thing rattles me.

Re: Crashed Junkers Ju88 On Channel Coast?

People pay US$5 + P&P for a reproduction of a photo that has appeared in a book you can buy for maybe twice that????

There's one born every minute, as they say.

All the best

Andreas
