The old Chris Shores book, Fighters Over the Desert, says the following on page 140:

"On the return flight 450 (450 Squadron) strafed vehicles, and F/Sgt. McBurnie spotted a reconnaissance Bf 110 of 4.(H)/12 which he attacked; the tail came off this aircraft, when hit, and it dived into the sea near its own airfield, Oblt. Alexander Schult and his crew being killed."

RAF 450 Squadron was flying P-40 Kittyhawks at the time.

I though he may be pilot of a recon BF109. The location in Egypt match the one in his Decease Certificate.
Many thanks Matti.
