500 Squadron Hudson shot down 27th Dec 1942 by a 1.(F)/122 aircraft?
I'v been recommended to join this group as there are members here with extensive Lüftwaffe knowledge. I do hope that someone here that can please help me in my research.
I'm researching the RAF history of both my father, Flt. Lt. Jack Hubert Stigner (89334) RAFVR of 53 Squadron, and his best mate, Flt. Lt. Desmond Victor Varian (89330) RAFVR of 500 (County of Kent) Squadron.
Desmond Varian was shot down over the Mediterranean Sea, in a 500 Squadron Hudson MkV 'W' AM689, on 27th December 1942, having taken off from Blida, Algeria, at 09.00 hours on an anti-submarine search (Operation Mascara).
I have recently been advised that his aircraft was possibly shot down by "a German reconnaissance aircraft of 1.(F)/122 south of Cartagena at 10.45 hours."
Is there any way of finding any further information to confirm this? And if so, is it possible to find out the Lüftwaffe aircraft type, and names of the crew? And are there 1.(F)/122 squadron records still exsisting that copies can be made from?
