Wreckage identification

Some friends in France have recovered items of wreckage just outside their village of Chanteheux, to the East of Lunéville in the départment of Meurthe-et-Moselle. Local eyewitnesses cannot give a date of the crash and it is unknown if the pilot managed to bail out or still lies buried with the wreck if a full recovery were to be undertaken. I am unable to offer them any information as all of my databases relate to US fighters, and this seems to be almost certainly RAF, and very possibly a Hurricane, since wooden parts have been found along with the standard .303 rounds. Attached are a couple of photos of items recovered with the number 172791 clearly seen on one of them. Any information concerning RAF single-seaters lost in that vicinity would be very much appreciated.

Peter

Re: Wreckage identification

Hurricanes or Battles were in the area during "Phoney War" 1939/40 and during the German attack to France from May 10th, 1940 on.

Hope this helps

Thanks Horst. That should give them something to go on.
