Re: Interesting Photo with Unit Emblem

Stephen,

The emblem is that of the 3.(F)/33.
The info given with the photo is also correct in that it was taken at Athens-Tatoi. I also have the identity of the guy listed in my files and will dig it out when I have time if you are interested.

Regards
Dave

Re: Interesting Photo with Unit Emblem

Stephen,

In addition, although the emblem is that of the 3.(F)/33, when applied to the aircraft of the Staffel (rarely), it was done so in a much more simplified form.

Dave

Re: Interesting Photo with Unit Emblem

Stephen,

To follow on from my earlier posts - the photo was taken at Kalamaki and not Tatoi as I stated earlier.

Re: Interesting Photo with Unit Emblem

Dave,

Thank you for the reply. Try as I might, I could not find that emblem in my references; e.g., it appears to have been overlooked in Luftwaffe Emblems. Did you picture any 3.(F)/33 aircraft in Aufklarer? I suspect it's a rare one. Obviously, the photo with folder was a keepsake of a unit member.

I doubt that gentleman would have ever imagined his service memento would be "on eBay" or discussed here +60 years later!

Best regards,
Steve

Re: Interesting Photo with Unit Emblem

Hello Stephen,

There is a partial view of one of the units Ju 188s on p.200 of my old 'Aufklärer' book but it carried no emblem.

Interestingly, I have some 30+ photos of aircraft from the Staffel but only four or five have the emblem applied.

Regards

Dave
